Join Our Cause! “By the People,” the Library of Congress’s crowdsourcing site, seeks those willing to transcribe handwritten historical documents so that they can become accessible to all. No experience necessary!
LOC has a particular need for those interested in working on the papers of Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s partner in crime, Susan B. Anthony and Mary Church Terrell, a staunch advocate for African Americans and women. Anna E. Dickinson and Carrie Chapman Catt need your help too as part of the “Suffrage: Women Fight for the Vote” campaign, as do the diaries and journals of famed Civil War medical professional, Clara Barton, the “Angel of the Battlefield.”
Work on your own time as a virtual volunteer! Anyone can carefully transcribe and tag keywords so give it a go—and with all your experience in fully comprehending autocorrects, random capitalizations, and misspellings in 21st-century texting, you have untapped skills for this job! Correspondence, diaries, speeches, appointment books, and more await your interest and dedication to the cause!
Are you an educator? Need a community service or service learning opportunity? Check out the LOC resources and get others in on the excitement.
